Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is an aromatic herbaceous, perennial, and shrubby plant indigenous to the Mediterranean and Central Asia. It belongs to the genus Origano of the order of the lamellar angiosperms. The disinfectant and antibacterial properties of oregano essential oil were first recognized in ancient Greece where it was often used for treating bacterial infections on the skin or wounds. It was also used to protect food from bacteria. Oregano essential oil is used in aromatherapy primarily to combat respiratory problems such as asthma, bronchitis and cough. Its strong antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and antiparasitic action is also known.
