Description
Turmeric, scientific name Curcuma longa is a rhizomatous and herbaceous plant that belongs to the Zingiberaceae family native to south Asia. The active ingredient of curcuma is the substance curcumin, in which it also owes its orange-yellow color. Research shows that curcumin has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and therefore many benefits to our health. It can “reduce” cholesterol and have beneficial effects on malignant tumors. It is also beneficial to Alzheimer’s patients as it can stop further disease development by preventing the accumulation of β-amyloid protein in the brain. The root of turmeric is currently used in traditional Asian medicine to treat gastrointestinal disturbances, arthritic pain, dysmenorrhea, and to stimulate the body.
