Description
Milk thistle, scientific name Silybum marianum is a spiny plant reaching a height of 1.5 meters. For therapeutic purposes we use seeds and roots. The seeds contain flavonoid glycosides, essential oil, malic acid salts, potassium nitrate, bitter element and glidant. Their action helps in the proper functioning of the bile, increasing the secretion and flow of bile from the liver and gall bladder. According to tradition, the white marks like veins on its green leaves were caused when drops of Virgin Mary’s milk fell on the plant and for this reason it got its English name milk thistle or Mary thistle (thorn of Mary).
