Description
Ashwaganda, scientific name Withania Somnifera belonging to the Solanaceae family and most known as Indian ginseng. It is a small, perennial bush with green blossoms and orange berries, which thrives mainly in dry areas of India. Ashwaganda has been used in the last 2,500 years in traditional Indian medicine Ayurveda to enhance longevity, mental and physical well-being, endurance, vitality and sexual energy. The plant’s substances that are mainly responsible for its medical effects are chemicals called biethanols, which resemble steroid hormones in the body. However, the plant contains a variety of bioactive substances such as steroidal lactones, bactagulin, avagantholine, cambophil. Recent research has shown that some of these plant components, when taken at the appropriate dose, can affect the function of various neurotransmitters and may therefore be useful in the treatment of mental disorders. Ashwaganda has a calming effect on the central nervous system. Scientific studies have shown that it reduces stress hormones such as cortisol. Because it is a mild tranquilizer, it is also used to treat insomnia.
